The US was actually one of the last major nations to abolish slavery (1865). Britain, France, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Russia, Cuba, Sweden, Peru, Bolivia, Wallachia, Venezuela and dozens of others all abolished slavery decades before the United States. The British Empire abolished slavery in 1807.
